Session #19:
Serving the Community in Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

January 9, 2024

12 p.m. – 1 p.m.
Virtual Zoom Presentation
Free – online Zoom

The Diversity & Inclusion and Access to Justice/Pro Bono Committees of the Detroit Bar Association invite you to attend the pre-MLK Day webinar. We will be joined by several community service providers describing volunteer needs and opportunities enabling you to observe the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on the 15th or other days during the year.

Presenters:

  • Amanda Paletz, The Joseph Project. The Joseph Project works exclusively with human trafficking survivors to address legal needs related to their exploitation.  While we do not limit our assistance to the certain practice areas, the most frequent legal needs we encounter are: criminal record relief (expungements), active criminal cases, legal name changes, family law matters (custody/divorce), credit restoration assistance, immigration matters (typically involving labor trafficking).
  • Stephanie LaBelle, Project Clean Slate. Project Clean Slate is in need of attorneys to conduct Zoom prep sessions with our clients; and attend the expungement hearing (usually Zoom, some are in person).
  • Tonya Myers Phillips, Sugar Law Center. Sugar Law Center is seeking pro bono attorneys who can take on unemployment insurance benefit administrative appeals on a referral basis when community needs exceed our capacity.  On occasion, there is a need for pro bono counsel on affirmative housing justice cases.
  • Maureen Krasner Michigan Community Resources. Each year, MCR staff and volunteer attorneys provide legal services to more than 100 nonprofit organizations in Detroit and throughout the state. Working together, these attorneys provide a wide range of business and transactional legal services to nonprofit organizations.

Moderator: John Sier, Chair, Detroit Bar Foundation Access to Justice Committee
