Free Veterans Benefits Law Training to be Held in the U.P. June 26

5/23/08

A free training session for Upper Peninsula attorneys interested in helping veterans with legal issues related to disability and pension benefits will be held on Thursday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with registration and continental breakfast beginning at 8:30 a.m. The training seminar will be held in Room 41 of the Marquette County Courthouse, located 231 West Baraga Ave. in Marquette.

The seminar will cover the process for obtaining veterans benefits, explain the reasons benefits are denied, and discuss methods of appealing claim denials at the Board of Veterans Appeals and the Court of Appeals of Veterans Claims.  Attorneys also will learn effective advocacy strategies in dealing the Veterans Affairs system and be briefed on recent developments in the area of veterans law.

Continental breakfast and lunch are included at no charge to participants.  In exchange for attending, attorneys will be asked to accept at least one veterans law case on a pro bono basis. The training is sponsored by the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Veterans Law Clinic, with generous support and funding from the Michigan Legislature.

Attendance at the veterans law training is limited to the first 30 attorneys. Those interested in participating can register by e-mailing Karen at brocklkl@students.udmercy.edu
